Pictures Reframed

18-11-2009

The tour of Pictures Reframed will start in New York at the Lincoln Center on the 13th and 14th November, 2009 and will pass to the Champs Elysées’s theatre on Friday December 11th, 2009.

Composed in 1874 Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition was experimental in its day and highly visual in its content. It is one of today’s most famous pieces of classical music, a work which has been visited and revisited by countless artists over its 130 year history.

Pictures Reframed, unites two strikingly original artists- pianist Leif Ove Andsnes and visual artist Robin Rhode — in a collaborative performance which centres around Mussorgsky’s epic piano suite Pictures atan Exhibition. Known for his bold “moving” creations and performance-based videos, Robin Rhode and Leif Ove Andsnes have conceived a programme which brings together music and film in an evocative performance, featuring other solo works by Mussorgsky and Schumann, a new commission by Austrian composer Thomas Larcher and culminating in Mussorgsky’s masterpiece.

Chambres à Part II

22-10-2008

After « Chambre à Part » in the hotel Sezz in 2006, « Chambres à part II » will take place this year in La Réserve – Paris : Laurence Dreyfus proposes an exhibition of hand-picked artists, in a exceptional and prestigious setting.

Announced in the VIP program of the Fiac, « Chambres à part » presents, inside one of the apartments, a selection of works: the result of two years of two years of peregrinations, seeking contemporary talents.

Every space of the apartment will be a surprise for the eyes, from the bathroom to the dressing-room, to the bedrooms and the kitchen. Visitors will be invited to walk around from one room to another, ending the visit in an erotic room to explore with a candle. Visits conducted by appointment only.

With Assume Vivid Astro Focus, Rina Banerjee, Dominique Blais, Martin Boyce, Nathan Carter, Matali Crasset, Alexandre da Cunha, Paul McDevitt, Monique Frydman, Kendell Geers, Matt Greene, Wade Guyton & Kelley Walker, Koo Jeong-a, Dionisis Kavallieratos, Jeff Koons, Jochen Kuhn, Abigail Lane, Jorge Macchi, Duncan Marquiss, Vik Muniz, Bruce Nauman, Seth Price, Jean-Jacques Rullier, Takis, Tatiana Trouvé, Joana Vasconselos, Iris van Dongen, Jean-Luc Verna, Yi Zhou and surprises...

This exhibition will be the occasion to associate « avant-garde » art with an exceptional Parisian event.

Calcaire Monique Frydman

20-10-2008

Announced in the VIP and events program of the Fiac, the exhibition Calcaire presents the artist’s latest canvases. Monique Frydman is a major figure of French abstraction. She has built her career through her rare and coherent artistic involvement. She rigorously pursues into abstraction her quest for sensitive perception.

Monique Frydman states: « Sight, our sight, is burned by the excess of images. We see too much, and our eyes become blind ». The white paintings CALCAIRE reflect a demand for the purity and self-effacement proper to her work. Her white ethereal canvases oscillate between real and mental space. She makes painting a fundamental artistic experience by affirming her taste for the essential and the diaphanous.

The limestone refers to sedimentation and friability, as does the white in chalk. « White is the soul of chalk » Monique specifies. In this sense, this series is constructed as walls which invite us to look beyond what they seem to be.
This exhibition was necessary in order to view or re-view Monique Frydman’s work. She hasn’t exhibited in Paris for 4 years. Calcaire fits in and can be understood in the perspective of the exhibitions Traces du Sacré at the Centre Pompidou and Richard Serra’s Monumenta at the Grand Palais, both exhibitions which question the beautiful and the sublime.
